1 Thessalonians, Chapter 5 (Pauline Epistles)

The Day of the Lord

1And concerning the times and seasons,{1} brothers, you do not have need to be written,{2} 2for you yourselves accurately know that the day of the Lord{3} comes as a thief at night.{4} 3For when they say, “Peace and safety,” then sudden destruction comes on them, as travail does to the pregnant woman, and they may not at all escape.{5} 4But you, brothers, not are in darkness,{6} so that this day should overtake[1] you as a thief;{7} 5You all are sons of light, and sons of day.{8} We are not of night, nor of darkness.{9} 6Therefore, let us not also sleep as the rest,{10} but let us watch and be sober,{11} 7for those who sleep, sleep by night, and those who are[2] drunk, are drunk by night.{12} 8But we, being of the day,{13} let us be sober, putting on a breastplate of faith and of love,{14} and a helmet of the hope of salvation;{15} 9not because God appointed us to wrath,{16} but for the obtainment of salvation through our Lord, Jesus Christ,{17} 10the one who died on our behalf, so that whether we watch or we sleep, together with him we may live.{18} 11So comfort one another, and build up each other,[3]{19} as indeed you do.

Instructions and Exhortations

12And we ask you, brothers, to recognize[4] those laboring among you and take leadership of you in the Lord and warn you,[5]{20} 13And esteem them most exceedingly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves.{21} 14And we exhort you, brothers, to warn the insubordinate. Comfort the faint-hearted, care for those being weak, and be long-suffering toward all.{22} 15See that no one[6] returns evil for evil,{23} but always follow the good even toward one another and toward all.{24}

16Always rejoice.{25} 17Pray without ceasing.{26} 18In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus to you.{27} 19Do not quench the spirit.{28} 20Do not despise prophecies.{29} 21Test all things.{30} Hold fast to the good.{31} 22Keep back from every form of evil. 23And may He, the God of peace Himself, sanctify you fully,{32} and your whole spirit and soul and body, so you may be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.{33}

Blessing and Admonition

24Faithful is He who calls you, who also will do it.{34} 25Brothers, pray concerning us.{35} 26Greet all the brothes with a holy kiss.{36} 27I charge you by the Lord to read the epistle to all the holy brothers.{37} 28The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.{38}
